Sauvage was built around a single image: wide open desert land under a violent sky, something raw and untamed. François Demachy, Dior's in-house perfumer, designed it as a spiritual descendant of Eau Sauvage, the house's 1966 classic, but stripped down and sharpened for a different era. Johnny Depp became the face of the campaign from the start and has stayed attached to it for the better part of a decade, shot against actual canyon landscapes that lean into the same wilderness the name promises. It went on to become the best-selling men's fragrance in the world, built on almost nothing but bergamot and a single molecule — Ambroxan — pushed harder than most fragrances would dare.
