In 2007, oud was still a niche ingredient in the West — something you'd find in a specialty Middle Eastern perfumery, not on a department store shelf. Tom Ford, working with perfumer Richard Herpin, built Oud Wood specifically to change that, taking the smoky, incense-heavy character of traditional oud and polishing it into something a mainstream luxury customer would reach for. It worked well enough that the fragrance is now widely credited with kicking off the oud craze that reshaped an entire decade of Western perfumery. Cardamom and pepper open it, but oud and sandalwood are the actual argument being made.
