Ben Gorham grew up between Toronto, New York, and Stockholm, with an Indian mother and a Canadian father, and has described himself more than once as a kind of gypsy by circumstance rather than choice. Gypsy Water, from 2008, is Byredo's early attempt to bottle that specific rootlessness — not any one place, but the idea of freedom that comes from not being tied to one. Built by perfumer Jérôme Epinette around juniper, pine, and incense, it's meant to smell like campfire smoke and open forest rather than a specific culture's fragrance tradition, a romanticized idea of the road rather than a literal destination.
