Gentleman started as a man, not a scent. In 1969, Hubert de Givenchy — tall, precise, obsessive about elegance — named his first menswear line after himself, calling it simply "Gentleman Givenchy." The fragrance followed in 1974, built to capture whatever it was about him that made a room notice: quiet, not loud, but unmistakable.
