By the time Althaïr launched, Parfums de Marly had run through most of its stock of noble horse names, so they looked up instead of back — Althaïr takes its name from Altair, one of the brightest stars in the night sky, its Arabic root meaning "the flying eagle." It's a shift in the house's mythology, trading the racetrack for the cosmos, but the perfume itself stays grounded in something very old: Bourbon vanilla, the ingredient that first arrived in France during Louis XV's reign and that Parfums de Marly treats as a kind of legacy material. Cinnamon and orange blossom open it, praline and candied almond close it out — warm, sweet, a little indulgent.
