In 2007, oud was still a specialty-shop material in the West. Tom Ford and Richard Herpin built Oud Wood to put it on a department-store counter: smoky woods, sanded down. Cardamom and pepper open it. Oud, sandalwood, and vetiver are the argument. Tonka, vanilla, and amber keep it wearable. It is the gateway oud, which is why it still gets mentioned twenty years later.
