Aventus was built as a biography. Released in 2010 for Creed’s 250th anniversary, the brief traces pieces of Napoleon’s life — ambition, exile, empire. Blackcurrant stands in for Corsica, where he was born; birch for Louisiana, the territory he once held and sold. The name is an old word for success. Whatever you make of the mythology, it became the most influential men’s fragrance of the last two decades because the structure is simple and hard to kill: bright fruit up top, a pineapple accord in the heart, then smoky birch and musk underneath.
