So here is the honest version, including the parts that cut against us: much of what gets written about “skin chemistry” is perfumery folklore dressed as science, and several of the most confident claims out there — including on brand blogs — have no controlled study behind them. We flag which is which throughout.
If you only read one thing: The fragrance is not in the bottle. It is what happens when the bottle meets a specific person’s skin — its acidity, its oil, its temperature, and the bacteria living on it. The best-evidenced fact in this field is that perfume does not simply mask your natural scent; it blends with it, and the blend is individual. In a 2012 study, men wore their own chosen perfume on one armpit and a randomly assigned perfume of equal pleasantness on the other. Raters preferred the own-perfume blend on attractiveness (Z = 2.37; N = 21; p = 0.02) and pleasantness (Z = 2.48; N = 21; p = 0.01) (Source: PLoS ONE, 2012). Your friend did not find a better perfume. They found a better blend.

The bottle is not the fragrance
Here is the mental model worth replacing. Most people treat a perfume like a recorded song: the bottle holds a fixed thing, and everyone who plays it hears the same thing. That is how a blotter strip behaves. Paper has no temperature, no oil, no pH, no bacteria; paper plays the recording. Skin is an active chemical surface, and the fragrance is the result of the interaction, not the input to it. Lenochová and colleagues ran three experiments blending perfume with real human body odour and reported that “the interaction between individual donors and perfume treatment was highly significant for all rated variables” (Source: PLoS ONE, 2012). The same perfume on different people did not differ slightly in degree. It behaved differently, person to person, on every dimension rated.
So when a scent floors you on your friend and goes flat on you, nothing went wrong. You were never smelling the perfume. You were smelling your friend, wearing it.
Skin pH: why the same opening burns off faster on some people
Healthy skin is mildly acidic. A 2022 review reports that “recent investigations measuring skin surface pH in healthy volunteers report an average pH between 4.1 and 5.8” (Source: PLoS Pathogens, 2022). pH is logarithmic, so the gap between a person at 4.1 and one at 5.8 is not a rounding error. It is a genuinely different environment for a molecule to land in — and perfume is not chemically inert once it hits you. Many fragrance materials are esters and aldehydes, and acidity influences how fast those bonds break down. What you smell at minute forty is partly a product of what has already been dismantled by then.
The caveat. The confident claims you will read — “acidic skin sharpens citrus,” “alkaline skin fast-forwards to the base” — come from trade blogs, not controlled studies. We looked for a peer-reviewed experiment isolating skin pH against perceived fragrance character and found none. The industry version: “if the top notes in your fragrance are citrusy, the acids in your skin can make the scent fade faster” (Source: Snif). Treat it as perfumer convention with a plausible mechanism, not settled fact.

Oil as a fixative: the clearest difference between two wearers
If a friend has ever said a fragrance “lasts all day” on something that vanished on you in ninety minutes, sebum is the usual suspect. Sebum is the lipid film your skin produces, and fragrance oils are oil-soluble, so on oilier skin more of the fragrance binds into that layer and releases slowly rather than flashing off: “the sebum will trap the scent molecules and lock them into your skin” (Source: Snif).
If your skin runs oily, you have a natural amplifier. Sweet, heavy material gets louder and can tip syrupy by lunchtime; astringent and structural material holds its shape. Spray less than the label suggests.
If your skin runs dry, you have a leaky container. Light molecules leave before the composition has made its case — often before the base has opened, which our guide to top, heart and base notes explains takes roughly half an hour. Unscented moisturiser first is the standard fix, and heavier material — sandalwood, vanilla, benzoin, oud — gives you more to hold onto.
No peer-reviewed study puts a number on this. Claims like “oily skin holds scent 2.3× longer” are marketing copy with no traceable source, and we have excluded them.
Body heat: why the same spray blooms on one person and stays quiet on another
This one is just physics. Vapour pressure — how readily a liquid escapes into the air — rises with temperature, and not in a straight line: “the vaporization curves of most liquids have similar shapes with the vapor pressure steadily increasing as the temperature increases” (Source: Chemistry LibreTexts). The industry observation matches: “warmer skin increases the rate at which fragrance molecules evaporate, causing a perfume to smell stronger immediately after application” (Source: Snif).
The trade-off is what people miss. Heat does not give you more fragrance; it gives you the same fragrance faster — louder in hour one, at the cost of hours five through eight. Diet, hormones and medication: the variables that move week to week
Everything above is roughly stable about you. This section is not, which is why one afternoon is a weak test.
Hormonal state changes your own nose, measurably. In a 36-woman study, naturally cycling women showed “a decline of 19% (p = 0.003) in olfactory discrimination of body odors” from the follicular to the luteal phase, and women on oral contraceptives showed “a 23% reduction (p = 0.01) in discrimination accuracy of body odors” during the withdrawal week — an effect specific to body odours, absent for ordinary odorants (Source: Chemosensory Perception, 2019). Note what that is about: the perceiver, not the wearer. The same blend reads differently to you in different weeks.
Your own perfume dulls your nose. In a 19-person panel, the no-fragrance condition scored 7.89 ± 3.58 on odour threshold against 5.95 ± 3.37 at three sprays and 3.67 ± 2.38 at ten; identification was unaffected (Source: Foods, 2022). Nose-blindness with lab numbers attached — and a blunt consequence: you are the worst-positioned person in the room to judge how much you are wearing. Ask someone. Then spray less.
Diet is real but thinly sourced. Food does reach your skin emissions and does shift how your body odour is rated by others, but the widely-repeated version of that claim traces back through blog posts to a study nobody names, so we leave the number out. Medication and health conditions genuinely change body odour. A sudden or unexplained change in how you smell is a conversation to have with a doctor, not a problem to solve with a stronger perfume. Fragrance is not a treatment.
The part almost nobody mentions: the bacteria
Sweat itself is not the smell. “Contrary to popular belief, this viscous fluid [sweat] is naturally almost entirely odorless,” notes the American Society for Microbiology. The odour is manufactured afterwards, by bacteria: “S. hominis encodes a proton-coupled oligopeptide transporter that imports the thioalcohol-conjugated precursor S-Cys-Gly-3M3SH into the cell, and subsequent catabolism results in the foul-smelling 3M3SH” (Source: American Society for Microbiology, 2021).
Your scent baseline is partly a product of which bacterial species colonised you, and every fragrance is layered on top of it rather than instead of it. Two people spraying the same atomizer are not running the same experiment. It is also why we distrust any “scent analysis” promising to compute your fragrance from a questionnaire. Nobody can compute your blend; they can only narrow the search.

What this means for buying
All of it collapses into one rule: your skin is a filter you cannot simulate, so buy in a way that lets you test it cheaply. Concentration is the one lever that behaves predictably on anyone. Eau de toilette runs at “5-15%” fragrance oil, eau de parfum at “around 15-20%,” and parfum or extrait at “usually 20-30%” (Source: Ulta Beauty). If a fragrance you love keeps dying on dry skin, moving up a concentration beats doubling the sprays of a weaker one.

Note the word: balance, not eliminate. Nothing you spray cancels your own chemistry. It composes with it.
Frequently asked questions
Does blood type affect how perfume smells on you?
No. There is no evidence base for this in the literature. It is folk belief. The variables with real mechanisms are the ones above: acidity, sebum, temperature, microbiome, hormonal state.
Why does my perfume smell amazing for ten minutes and then like nothing?
Two likely causes: dry skin losing top notes faster than intended, or nose-blindness, a lab-measurable effect rather than a figure of speech (Source: Foods, 2022). Ask someone else before concluding a fragrance has poor longevity on you.
Everyone says Baccarat Rouge 540 smells different on everyone. Should I try it?
It is the textbook example, and we will be straight: Baccarat Rouge 540 is not in the Base Note rotation. We do not carry Maison Francis Kurkdjian and will not pretend otherwise to keep you on the page. If the draw is the saffron-and-warm-amber character, the closest by note structure are Initio Side Effect (saffron and tobacco over sandalwood) and Parfums de Marly Haltane (saffron and praline over oud and leather). If the draw is the sweet white-musk dry-down, Xerjoff Erba Pura is nearer. None is a substitute, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
Can I fix my skin chemistry?
Mostly no, and be suspicious of anyone selling the fix. Moisturise before applying, adjust spray count, choose concentration deliberately, pick materials that suit your skin rather than fight it. That is the whole toolkit, and it is enough. Test a full day on skin, across a warm day and a cool one, before deciding.
The bottom line
The question in the title has an uncomfortable answer: your friend is not wearing the same fragrance as you, even when the bottle is identical. They are wearing a blend of that fragrance and themselves, and so are you. The 2012 evidence suggests this is not a defect in the system. It is the system — people gravitate toward perfumes that work with their own chemistry, without knowing it.
So the only reliable method is the boring one. Wear things, long enough to reach the dry-down, across different weather, and listen to other people rather than your own compromised nose.
